Attix's Attic

Building my dream craft room

Down to the wire

So for the past couple of weekends, it’s been wiring, wiring, and more wiring. Can light fixtures, and wiring. Electrical outlets, and wiring. Light switches, and wiring. Light boxes for chandeliers, and wiring.

I never realized out difficult it could be to decide where to put outlets. You’ve got to decide where you’ll do which type of work, and where cabinets will go, and shelving. Do the outlets go above the cabinets? Below or behind shelves? How many on a wall? Where’s the logical place for a light switch? Do you want all lights to come on with one switch?

That’s a lot to contemplate when you haven’t even bought the cabinets and don’t know how many IKEA Kallax units will fit on the knee wall.

But we’re that much closer to the part I like best — decorating!

Small steps this week

So the contractor has a question in to the guy who approves the electrical stuff for Granville County. We can’t move forward ’til that question is answered. But the transom window for my room came in yesterday. The transom will let light in from the unfinished side of the attic, where there’s a window that faces the street. We’re trying to let as much natural light in as possible without adding more windows or a skylight. And I found the perfect chandelier at Home Depot. I don’t see it online, so I can’t link you to a picture.

Later that weekend …

The contractor got the transom in on Sunday morning before it got too hot. There’s no trim around the window yet, and I can see that it’ll let in a lot of natural light in a dark corner of the craft room. I’m so excited!

Nothing new to report

No physical work this week, but lots of searching for the perfect shabby chic chandeliers to hang over the craft table and the sewing table. Work on the attic was derailed (hah! get it? ‘cuz the contractor is building his train room?) for the contractor’s birthday. We’re having friends over this afternoon, and there’s been much cleaning and yard stuff.

Many thanks to my friend John for the new title of the blog. Kudos!
